Hybrid training is a new name for something people have always done: lift and run in the same block, and expect to get better at both. It has a name now because for forty years the received wisdom said you had to choose, and that wisdom came from a single 1980 experiment that almost nobody who quotes it has read. The study is more interesting than the slogan it produced — and the modern evidence is considerably more forgiving.
What hybrid training actually is
A hybrid athlete is training two qualities that pull in different directions: the ability to produce force, and the ability to sustain output. In practice that usually means two to four lifting sessions and two to four runs in a week, with one quality nominated as the priority and the other built slowly or deliberately held. Hybrid — 6 Day is that structure written out: three lifting days and three cardio sessions a week, programmed together.
It is not "lifting, then fifteen minutes on the treadmill." That is lifting with a cool-down. Hybrid training means both qualities are programmed — sets and loads on one side, paces and distances on the other — and both are expected to move on a schedule. The distinction matters because almost every problem people hit is a problem of dose or timing, and you cannot manage a dose you never wrote down.
What Hickson actually found in 1980
The original study put three groups through ten weeks: strength only, endurance only, or both. The endurance group cycled and ran forty minutes a day, six days a week. The strength group lifted five days a week. The concurrent group did all of it. Their leg strength improved at the same rate as the strength-only group for the first seven weeks — then levelled off and declined in weeks nine and ten. Their aerobic gains, meanwhile, matched the endurance-only group exactly (Hickson, Eur J Appl Physiol 1980).
Two things get left out when this becomes "cardio kills gains." The combined dose was enormous — eleven hard sessions a week, more than most people reading this will ever do. And strength still improved for seven of the ten weeks. What Hickson found was a ceiling reached at a very high combined workload, not a switch that flips the moment you go for a run.
How big the cost really is
Two meta-analyses have since sized it, and they disagree in an instructive way.
The first pooled twenty-one studies and found the penalty was not uniform: hypertrophy was affected least, maximal strength more, and explosive power most. Interference scaled with how often and how long people trained endurance, and — the most quoted finding — concurrent running produced significant decrements where concurrent cycling did not (Wilson et al., J Strength Cond Res 2012).
The updated analysis, covering forty-three studies, was more forgiving still. Across the pooled data, concurrent training did not compromise muscle hypertrophy or maximal strength at all. Only explosive strength was meaningfully attenuated — and that attenuation was pronounced when the aerobic and strength work happened in the same session, but not when the two were separated by at least three hours. It found no difference between cycling and running, and none for training frequency, training status or age (Schumann et al., Sports Med 2022).
Read those two together and the practical message is unusually clear. If you want to be visibly muscular and run well, the literature says you can have both. If you compete on jumping, sprinting or any expression of raw power, you are the case where the trade-off actually bites — and your first fix is spacing, not volume.
The honest summary: concurrent training costs you very little muscle and very little maximal strength. It costs explosive power, and it costs it most when you stack both qualities into the same hour. That is a scheduling problem before it is a physiology problem.

Order has been tested directly rather than assumed. A meta-analysis of ten trials comparing intra-session sequence found that doing the resistance work first produced better lower-body dynamic strength than the reverse, with no meaningful difference for hypertrophy, aerobic capacity or body fat (Eddens et al., Sports Med 2018). So the rule is simple: if they share a session, lift first.
Why lifting makes you a faster runner
The traffic is mostly one way. Running rarely improves your squat, but strength training reliably improves running. A systematic review of twenty-four trials in trained middle- and long-distance runners found that adding strength work generally improved running economy — the oxygen cost of holding a given pace — by roughly two to eight percent, alongside improvements in time-trial and sprint performance, while leaving maximal oxygen uptake, blood lactate and body composition largely untouched (Blagrove et al., Sports Med 2018).
That is the argument runners almost never hear. Two short, heavy sessions a week are not a tax on your mileage. Once your volume is already where it should be, they are one of the few remaining levers you have.

How much easy running is a separate question with a well-worn answer — the case for easy aerobic work is the piece of this that hybrid athletes get wrong most often. And once you are on five or six days, recovery becomes the limiting factor faster than either discipline does.
Where hybrid athletes blow up
- Everything hard, every week. Two disciplines both run at maximum effort is not twice the training, it is half the adaptation. Something has to be easy.
- Easy runs that creep to moderate. The most common failure by a distance. Moderate pace produces the fatigue of hard training with a fraction of the benefit, and it is what silently eats your lifting.
- Eating for one sport. A deficit that was survivable when you only lifted becomes the reason both qualities stall.
- No priority. Running a strength block and a running block simultaneously, at full effort, then being surprised that neither moved. Pick one to build and one to hold, and swap every eight to twelve weeks.
